Just a Planting..

Our garden, Gordon, has been generous to us this year. We have put canned green beans and squash (plus we have been eating them fresh like crazy), we have frozen some purple hull peas (like black eye peas) and we have tomatoes, sweet potatoes, okra, and cantaloupe that are still filling our fridge. If that was not enough...we decided to have a bit of a pumpkin patch this year. The K-man planted "Mega" pumpkins

-and Little Bit planted "jack-o-lantern" pumpkins.
We have had pretty good luck in the past with pumpkins...I hope they grow huge for the boys sake and excitement!
Hmmm... I think I am getting in the mood for fall-
at least a break from this Texas heat wave!!!

Old Fashioned?

i know some may feel i'm old fashioned in many aspects. however, i like to call it sentimental! i remember my granny farris working out in her flower garden all the time. she had the most beautiful roses not to mention she still knows everything about any flower or plant available! so, i have worked hard to learn all i can from her and learn about flowers and plants to make my home look welcoming (just like hers)...AND i want my children to develop a green thumb too!

the same granny also has always been a great cook. our holiday meals have always been a cooking extravaganza! i also have always enjoyed the times with my adorable husbands family in south texas with everyone in the kitchen and wonderful smells filling the house -often things from the garden! i too want to be able to cook for my family with comfort meals that let them know i have made it special just for them(the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, right?- and I have three boys!!!). i also want to make my guest feel welcome and special with meals from the heart. i heard one day while at a restaurant two older women saying that making homemade biscuits and pies would soon be a lost art- not if i can help it! along the same lines...my mother has always used a cast iron skillet-yes, i cook with one too. it should be a staple in every kitchen! another staple in the kitchen is an apron! even better...an apron for a friend who is helping you in the kitchen.

quilting is another secret love of my mine. my great grandmother (gramz) was a quilter and her memory lives on with her beautiful handmade quilts that are now a part of our family. i remember watching her with a thimble and needle in hand working away while all the women chatted. Sewing is something I feel may soon be also a lost talent. I remember going with my mom to pick out fabric for the perfect summer dress and watching her spread out the material and pattern across our dinning room table. I remember taking naps to the hummmm of the sewing machine. I have a sewing machine and it need to be used more!

my adorable husband's grandparents (pawpaw and nanaw) and his great grandparents have always had a garden. i love to hear him talk about there being so many potatoes picked it would cover an old barn floor or watching his mother and nanaw snapping beans together on the porch.

so, to continue the family tradition we too have a garden.
we hope to teach our boys how to grow a garden and enjoy working hard at something that is rewarding in many ways.
my adorable husband's mother has always canned pickles and green beans...so, what have i been doing over the last couple of days??

Yep!
i have waited years to get the family recipes for these!
well, i had to get a garden first!
so, while some may feel i am old fashioned- i think i am honoring those i love and keeping their love alive! i feel things have changed over the years...and many of these things i value and enjoy were done in a slower and more personal time. sometimes i really miss the times when people talked face to face while cooking, snapping peas, canning or quilting. hmmm. maybe I am a bit old fashioned-but proud of it!

While on break...

What have we been up to while I was on my blogging break??? Hmmm, actually...We have drawn a lot of pictures while wearing 3-D glasses and funny hats... We have eaten cereal off the floor because it's just better that way...
We have ridden buck'n horses...
We have watched our garden full of green beans, purple hull peas, squash, cucumbers, pickling cucumbers, cantaloupe, okra, water melon, and tomatoes grow large and full...
We have started the harvesting of the squash
(this is often a daily task-our first pick was 7 huge squash)... We have watched Little Bit enjoy his first year to actually pick the veggies from our garden
(he was a bit too young to enjoy the whole process last year)...

We have cooked our first summer dish from the garden-
a family recipe for fresh squash fritters...

We (actually my adorable husband and the K-Man) have been on a backyard camp-out...
Where sleeping in a tent was a must, AND...
Going on a frog hunt to catch 19 frogs was the highlight of the night!

REALLY...Who has time to BLOG?!?

* Note about the frog hunt... No frogs were hurt on this little adventure in our backyard! However, there was one Momma who was a bit nauseous at the sight of them!

Lacie, Lacie, How does your garden grow?

My Veggie garden on May 14. Wow, it is just taking off! Look at the rows!!
Can you believe I am actually growing corn? Me either!!!
We love fried okra. We will have enough for okra every night if we want!
I just tried a new recipe for squash- we are going to need a lot of ways to eat squash!!!

My garden is growing so fast! When we got back from our trip to Houston, I couldn't believe how much the veggies had taken off!!! Along with the veggies were also a large amount of weeds!! So over the last couple of days I have been trying to remove the weeds without hurting the plants. The garden hoe has become my new friend. I wonder if I am even using it right! It won't be long before I will have my first batch of home grown vegetables!!!

I need good vegetable recipes!!! Do you have any?

Grow Veggies Grow!

Straight Cucumber
zucchini squash
Okra
I didn't want to bore you with pictures of all the veggies, BUT They Are Growing! While I was gone they just took off. I guess the saying is true "a watched pot never boils". Before I left I was walking out there everyday to check- now they are just growing like crazy! I actually have rows!
They are all so cute just shooting out of the ground (I wonder if a veggie has ever been called cute?) I will keep you updated on their progress! Tonight I think I am going to go pull weeds. It is way to hot now. HOWEVER, it is never too hot to go take pictures!

My Flower Journal

Flowers just make me happy!!! Flowers that grow in My garden make me super happy!!!! At my new home there are the most wonderful and beautiful plants!! There are roses, iris, lantana, verbena, grape vines, jasmine, rosemary... just too many to name!!! Some I have planted and others that were here when I arrived. My goal is too find out and learn as much as I can about each plant. I am trying to take pictures of each plant and keep a journal. Right now the roses are my favorite!! I have never had roses but my Granny Farris always had the most beautiful roses (and flower garden). She has the green thumb of the family!!!! I included some pictures I took that will be in my journal! What are your favorite flowers or plants? Do you have any gardening hints?

Water Lilly

I was starting supper tonight and I looked out my kitchen window- there it was!!! The most BEAUTIFUL Water Lilly was in our pond! I ran outside and started calling to Kannon, "come see the flower in the water!" He was more excited about trying to feed the fish- but he did say it was pink! It is the simple things in life that often make us the happiest! This small little Water Lilly with it's pretty pink pedals just made me smile!
